While most postwar furniture designers were looking to the future, Dan Johnson found inspiration in the past for the Gazelle series while completing a commission to design a luxury apartment in Rome in the 1950’s. Johnson hired Italian craftsmen to produce walnut and bronze versions of this line of chairs using traditional casting and weaving techniques dating back to antiquity. Fewer than 150 pieces were ever produced. The Gazelle line, re-imagined in cast aluminum for Brown Jordan as Sol Y Luna, represents the ultimate marriage of classical and modern design.
